Spider Veins

Spider Veins

Does your job require sitting or standing for long periods of time? Have you noticed swollen or twisted veins in your legs as a result of remaining stationary? If yes, then you may have spider or varicose veins. But don’t worry, at the Vein Treatment Center, we can help you get rid of them.

Spider Vein Treatment

Do you have tiny red veins on your cheeks or on your legs?

These tiny reddish-purple web-like veins spread out from a common center. They are called spider veins because of their striking similarity to spider webs. They lead to discoloration of your face and legs and may contribute to discomfort and self-consciousness.

Spider veins, medically known as telangiectasia, are broken capillary blood vessels underneath the skin. They are especially visible on your thighs, ankles, around the nose, under the eyes, or on the cheeks.

Spider veins may not look scary or dangerous and in some cases, they really aren’t. But spider veins are often indicative of a dangerous underlying vein disease called venous insufficiency.

Luckily, you can cure spider veins with the proper and minimally-invasive treatments of the underlying disease.

At Vein Treatment Clinic, our vein doctors study your symptoms and curate a vein disease treatment plan specific to your needs. So schedule a consultation with a diplomat-certified vein doctor at your nearest vein treatment clinic.

What Causes Spider Veins?

Spider veins are caused by chronic venous insufficiency, a vein disease in which the valves in your veins malfunction and cause blood to pool in your legs. Vein disease also damages blood vessels, leading to spider veins.

A few risk factors for vein disease include the following:

  • Obesity: Being overweight or obese adds pressure on the veins. Overweight women also have higher levels of estrogen, which can contribute to vein disease.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy increases blood volume, causing your veins to swell up. The growing uterus adds pressure on the veins, thereby restricting blood from returning  to the heart. Pregnancy also increases your estrogen levels. All of these factors lead to spider veins.
  • Hormone Therapy: Birth control and hormonal estrogen therapy increase estrogen levels, that can reduce the rigidity of the valves in your veins. This increases the chances of blood pooling in your veins.
  • Medical History: If you’ve got a history of blood clots in your legs, you may have weakened valves. This increases your likelihood of contracting vein disease.
  • Family History: If you have a family history of spider veins and varicose veins, then you are much more likely to have them.
  • Posture: If you are predisposed to vein disease because of the aforementioned risk factors, then incorrect posture increases your likelihood of vein disease. If you sit or stand still for long periods, the increased pressure on your leg veins contribute to blood pooling in your legs. If you need to stand or sit for long periods of time, wear compression stockings or take a brisk walk every 30 minutes to facilitate proper blood circulation.

A few lifestyle choices can lower your risk of developing spider veins.

  • Wear compression stockings to add pressure on your veins and increase blood flow.
  • Engage in exercises like yoga, running, swimming, or cycling to encourage blood circulation from your legs.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Don’t cross your legs when you’re sitting. If you have to sit still for long stretches of time, elevate your legs to relieve pressure.

Symptoms of Spider Veins

The initial symptoms of spider veins and varicose veins can be mild. You may experience heaviness in your legs, swollen feet, itching and irritation, and a numbing or tingling sensation.

These symptoms are usually worse at the end of the day or after long periods of sitting or standing because of the accumulation of blood in your legs.

However, if your spider veins are caused by venous insufficiency, the symptoms rapidly progress and become dangerous. If left untreated, venous insufficiency can lead to the following complications:

  • Profuse bleeding, even with small scratches or bumps
  • Skin infections
  • Non-healing wounds, aka leg ulcers, due to lack of blood circulation in the legs

In rare cases, the accumulated blood in your veins clots and travel to the lungs, leading to a potentially lethal condition called pulmonary embolism.

Spider Vein Treatment

Sclerotherapy is the best spider vein treatment option available. This is a minimally-invasive procedure in which a medicine called sclerosant is injected into your spider veins to seal them shut and reroute blood to other healthy vessels.

Sclerotherapy is a completely safe treatment with negligible side effects and risks. It concludes within 30 minutes so that the patient can return to work immediately.

Laser therapy for spider veins is another popular spider vein treatment option. However, laser therapy can cause skin discoloration and it’s extremely ineffective. YIt requires multiple sessions over several weeks and months before you see any significant changes. As such, laser therapy isn’t a recommended spider vein treatment.

Note that both sclerotherapy and laser therapy are only suitable for surface spider veins. If you have venous insufficiency, these treatments will only cure spider veins temporarily. Recommended treatments for venous insufficiency include radiofrequency ablation, venaseal, and endovenous laser ablation.

It’s important to consult a diplomat-certified spider vein specialist who can test you for venous insufficiency. Based on the results of the test, they curate the best treatment plan for your needs.

FAQs About Spider Veins

Which procedure is used in the treatment of spider veins?

Sclerotherapy is the best procedure for spider veins treatment as it’s minimally-invasive, low-risk, causes no discomfort, and leads to zero downtime.

Are laser vein centers effective for spider vein removal?

Laser vein centers aren’t effective for spider vein removal because laser therapy only targets the superficial spider veins, not the underlying venous insufficiency. Furthermore, laser therapy is extremely ineffective and it takes multiple sessions before you see any results.

Can I get spider veins during pregnancy?

Yes, spider veins may grow visible or develop during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and an increase in blood volume.
